St Luke's - The Flowered-Out Church

Hurray! St Luke’s is open again (temporarily at least).

Sunday saw the official launch of Jason Dy’s installation ‘Flores de Mayo’.  Jason is a Filipino Jesuit priest and artist, studying at Liverpool Hope.  He is seeking to bring together Filipino communities in Liverpool and around the UK by celebrating their religious traditions and culture.  In the Philippines the month of May is a celebration of the Virgin Mary, whose devotion has a special place in Filipino worship.  Jason has brought this tradition to the ‘Bombed out Church’ by placing some 200 bamboo ‘stems’ in a regular pattern throughout the nave area garden.  Jason said that he chose bamboo to symbolise the flexibility and resilience of the Filipino people as well as their humility.  Each person who entered St Lukes over the last week has been given a fabric sunflower to place on one of the stems and the garden is now full of nodding yellow flowerheads .

It’s a lovely sight – it inspired us at Ruach-Blessing as we practised, a glimpse of the sun even on a grey day.

Come along and see for yourselves:  St. Luke’s is open Thursday to Sunday afternoons – weather permitting.  Ruach-Blessing is a moving meditation practice led by Ruth which happens every Thursday lunchtime, 1 – 2 pm.
