An Advent course on the transforming power of Lectio Divina Led by Revd Mark Waters

Lectio Divina is a life-giving way of praying the scriptures which leads us to a meeting place with God in our deepest centre. Cynthia Bourgeault says that it is ‘a Wisdom tool intended to develop the imagination’. So its transforming power is less a devotional practice and more a way of knowing which moves us to deeper levels of understanding and seeing.

The practice is simple and effortless but profound in its effects. Essentially it is about an encounter - a ‘heart to heart’ between your own being and the biblical text. Maria Tasto describes it as ‘listening with the ear of our heart to the ground of our being’ so that we ‘hear the Word of God resonating within us and drawing forth who we are called to be.’

The course aims to provide a powerful way of preparing for Christmas through the season of Advent. It will explore the theory behind Lectio Divina as well as providing times of practice and discussion. It will also look at how the practice might become an effective and regular part of a prayer life.
